Three daycare workers arrested for drugging toddlers before naptime

Three Illinois daycare workers have been arrested and charged with drugging kids before nap time at a Des Plaines daycare

The daycare employers, Kristen Lauletta, 32, Jessica Heyse, 19, and Ashley Helfenbein, 25, were accused of giving the toddlers melatonin gummy bears without parental consent.

According to Des Plaines Police Cmdr. Christopher Mierzw, the women were arrested and charged with two counts of battery and two counts of endangering the life of a child last Friday.

Management at the daycare reported one teacher to the police Friday afternoon that she had been handing out gummy bears laced with melatonin to her class of 2-year-olds without parents' permission.

“Allegedly, this was done in an effort to calm them down before nap time,” police said in a statement on Monday.

Following an investigation, police also arrested two other workers who were also involved in the crime.

CBS also reported that police there were four gummy bears left in a bottle of 120ml.

It was also reported that state Department of Children and Family Services have also launched an investigation, and all parents have been notified by both the daycare center and police.

The daycare workers are scheduled to appear in court on April 4.
