The video she reposted on social media was from a sermon by John Gray. In the sermon, Gray talked about women acting like girlfriends instead of already acting like a wife prior to marriage.
The mother-of-two reposted the video with the caption: "#LevelUp. Don’t Settle."

But a lot of people felt it was condescending and a way of letting single women feel they are inferior to married women and it's their fault they can't get a husband. The post sparked a debate on social media. Some said Ciara had a point seeing that she is now in a loving marriage. While others reminded her that she also was in the position of the single women she is now referring to and even had some bad relationships prior to meeting Russell.
Cici Adams, a reporter at People was one of those who called Ciara out on her post. Cici also criticized John Gray's preachings as a whole and said women are constantly told to be a certain way to attract a husband, whereas, no one ever tells men how to behave to attract a wife.
Cici tweeted: "Ciara telling women to “Level up” and live “like a wife” so they can b married is astounding to me. Didn’t you need grace, mercy & compassion when you were being dragged up and down the Internet for the Future situation? How quickly ppl forget when they reach a perch of privilege."

Following the backlash, Ciara posted an update explaining what she meant. See it below.
